Like a Good Passionista Should

How many of us have said we wanted to do something and didn’t do it—yet? How many items are on our “Live-It” lists? (I hate the term bucket list). As passionistas, our lists are probably longer than the average person. However, even as consummate dream chasers, there’s still so much that we would love to do. And unfortunately, because life somehow gets in the way, there’s so much that we’ve all left undone, sitting on the backburner of life awaiting its chance to become a “do it now” item.

What’s interesting is that the bigger those items are, the more time we take to getting around to it and the more obstacles we place in its path. Obstacles like, “I would, but,” and “If I had more time.” How about this one, “But I’m already so busy.”  Here’s a better one—fear! But wait! As passionistas aren’t we supposed to be fearless! Aren’t we designed to give life the business, stretching it as far and as wide as it can go so that we can get all we can from it?

The short answer is ABSOLUTELY! However, when reality sets it, we realize that we really aren’t super women so we need to start getting picky! Okay, we can’t do it all, but we can do some of it, perhaps push for most of it. Today, I’m charging each of you to pick one big item, something you’ve always wanted to do and would love to indulge in and remove it from the your life’s backburner. Bring it to the forefront and find a way to start making it happen. Give it a plan. Put a date on it, even if it’s months away. Add it to your calendar and set some reminders. It’s time to conquer something big in a fabulous way. There’s no better motivational booster than accomplishing something huge that you’ve always wanted to do.

Today’s post is encouraged by a cousin of mine who was born and bred in the south. She’s moved around quite a bit but never lived up north. As a child she visited New York often and always left in wide-eyed wonder. Though she was a southern girl at heart, there was something about New York that she found intriguing. A small part of her wanted to live the New York life. What kept her from making the move? I’m sure it was many of the same “valid excuses” that keep us from doing big things. But today, I want to applaud that woman because she finally cast all fear and doubt aside, said “I’m not getting any younger,” and forged ahead. She packed up her child and their lovely little doggie and headed for the Big Apple. Now she’s not only living a dream and enjoying the journey that it provides, but she kicked fear, doubt and all other excuses in the butt and did the darn thing and she’s now happier for it!

So go ahead dream girl, pick one—just one—and go for it, fearlessly, brilliantly, boldly like a good passionista should!

I applaud that and want to applaud you too so be sure to share your journey with us. If you’ve already set out to do something big, dramatic, and beautifully bold, let us know about it and keep us posted.

Fabulously yours,

You fellow passionista!

Brilliant, Beautiful, Bold!

Meet passionista, Katrina Butler Hill, a self-published author of the novels When the Well Runs Dry and the follow-up When the Well Runs Dry: Hushed Secrets in which she tackles issues of step-parenting, teenage pregnancies, affairs and homosexuality. In her writing she seeks to expose the true realities of relationships. She is a writer who is not afraid to discuss the topics that many have found to be “taboo” or “inappropriate”.  She’s just the kind of passionista we like here at SheBiz–beautiful & bold.

In honor of National Novel Writing Month (November. And so we are a little late with this post) we have asked Katrina to share on her passion for writing and how she completed her first novel.

1.      November is a time when many first time writers are buckling down from the 1st-31st to begin the task of creating their first novel. What was your process in writing your first novel “When the Well Runs Dry”?

My days are pretty full so it made sense for me to allot time for writing at night once. Starting out I wrote for a few hours twice per week for about a month. As the plot developed I found myself consumed at the oddest moments. I would actually stop in the middle of a conversation with someone, turn off the vacuum cleaner, turn down the radio or take out a piece of paper in the grocery store to jot down ideas as they popped into my head.  Writing “When the Well Runs Dry” was fun and took the place of my nightly television watching.

2.      You are also a fitness trainer, so obviously exercise is something you are passionate about. How passionate are you about writing and why?

I am very passionate about writing because of the response I received from my readers once my first novel was released.  I have many books in my head and hidden in my heart that I plan to publish in the near future.  My characters are real people with real issues. Readers easily find their refuge, safety, hurt and heartache between the pages.

3.      Finding a place to sit and write is important, especially when you are a parent. As a mother and wife where and when did you find time to write your first novel?

My best writing is done in the middle of the night when the house is quiet and everybody is asleep. I can write for hours once I start.

4.      We all find inspiration somewhere. Whether places we have traveled, friends we know, movies and music, etc. What inspired the story line of When the Well Runs Dry?

As a trainer you become a counselor, a listening ear, a mediator and more importantly you become a shoulder to lean on. I am inspired daily by my clients, friends and associates who share all sorts of interesting stories that I spice up and water down to fit the scenarios in my books.

5. What was the toughest part about completed your first book, did you conquer that by the time you began the second book?

The toughest part about completing my book was setting aside time to get the book published. Making the phone calls, sending the emails, going to UPS, etc. takes a lot of time and has to be juggled between my other responsibilities. It is still a mountain I’m climbing.

6. What advice can you offer to authors during NANOWriMO that will keep them encouraged along the way?

My advice would be to stay focused on the audience you are trying to reach. Know who you are talking to and whose life you plan to impact.

Unplugged…

Hey Passionistas!

It’s been a long time.  Life took over in a major way causing me to have to re-prioritize and re-organize. A few things had to be placed in the back burner, and SheBiz.net was one of them. One thing hasn’t changed and that was my focus on passionate living!

One thing that this tumultuous time has taught me was how to fine tune my focus.  Here’s what I’ve learned and you know I’m always willing to share valuable lessons:

Focus Begets Achievement!

Just like all passionistas, my plate was always full. So full that at times my sense of achievement suffered because no matter how hard I worked, there was still so much more to do and I never felt any sense of completion or accomplishment. Once my availability became challenged due of all the family emergencies monopolizing my time, I had to learn to prioritize better. Despite giving so much attention to my family, I still needed to get work done. I simply felt overwhelmed and under accomplished. Something needed to give!

Here’s what I did:

  • Wrote down roles, tasks, and projects that were most important.
  • Reorganized and narrowed my goals and priorities.
  • Added time frames for the completion of projects.
  • Place a few things on the backburner for when I had more free time.
  • Trimmed the fat! In other words, I cut out activities that weren’t necessary or beneficial to me or my family.
  • Freed time and obligations by finally learning to say no to some things.
  • Leaned on God to direct my path.

Lastly, I created a DBA list. What’s that, you ask? It’s a list of Dream Building Activities.  I felt like I accomplished the most when I invested my limited time working on the building blocks of my dream. I came across a quote that said, “Dreams come true for those who wake up every day and work hard at them.”  It was the catalyst for my turning point.

Each day I would select one or two items that were DBAs and despite whatever else I had on my to-do list for the day I would make sure that those DBAs were accomplished.  No matter what went on throughout the day or week, having accomplished a few major tasks that were pivotal to my overall goals made a world of a difference.  Some of the DBAs were; write a chapter or two, create a marketing strategy for the new book, complete a freelance writing assignment and hand it in early.  All of the tasks were time sensitive investments.

Today, my focus remains keen and my accomplishments are high. As a result, I’m enjoying this journal of living my dreams so much more. I urge you to try it for yourself!

And guess what dream girls! I’m Baaaaacckkkk!

Ciao!

Former Wall Street Diva KIC’s Herself…And Encourages You to Do the Same

Dawn Michelle Hardy, publicist extraordinaire and sister-friend to SheBiz.net caught up with a truly inspiring passionista who has created a brand that strictly focuses on motivating our sisters to “KIC” themselves! Allow me to introduce you to our latest dream girl, Tyeisha Delk, of Brooklyn, New York. Here’s what she explained to SheBiz, “KIC (kick) is a play on words. When you do something that you know you should not do you look back in regret and want to “kick” yourself. My motivation is for women to KIC themselves in advance through the touchstone triggering that comes from wearing the bracelet. “Don’t be controlled by your emotionsBe reminded of what you truly want and how you want to be perceived and act accordingly.”

Tyeisha describes ‘touchstone triggering’ as being similar to tying a string around your finger to remind yourself to do something. The bracelet reminds women to connect to that positive thoughts, intentions, and mindsets that encourage happiness, peace and harmony. She created KIC-Yourself bracelets, which reminds women to keep it-confident, courageous, cool, classy, cute, celibate, charitable, Christian, chic, cheery, and other positive “C” adjectives. A KIC-Yourself bracelet is a constant reminder of that mindset.

Tyeisha, walked away from her cushy “Wall Street,” job that she thought “made her who she was” to pursue her own path to a happy life. She realized that she wasn’t living her life on purpose and definitely wasn’t happy. “Two years prior, I lost my baby brother to a senseless murder and as a result it helped me put things into perspective. I had to take a chance on me and see that it wasn’t the high paying job that made me. It is the fact that I am a child of GOD. I shifted my focus and now I’m living every day as if it’s my last. My passion it to help women become aware of this same truth.”

Tyeisha believes that wearing the bracelet is an easy way for women to connect directly to an existing positive attitude. The bracelets, which are made of sterling silver, leather and Swarovski crystals, trigger a specific mindset that will keep women walking in peace and harmony during life’s hectic moments. Her goal is to encourage at least one million women to KIC themselves by sporting the bracelets.

Here are a few of Tyeisha’s suggestions for ways fellow passionistas can KIC themselves!

Keep-it-Clear:  Listening to your intuition and allowing GOD to speak through you while on your journey to purpose and passion.

Keep-It-Confident: Don’t allow yourself to be overwhelmed. Stay on your path and keep moving forward.

Keep-it-Clutter Free: Remove whatever takes away from your productivity.

For more details and information on the KIC-Yourself bracelets and to connect with Tyeisha, visit Facebook, Twitter or send an email to info@kic-yourself.com

Happy KIC’ing Dream Girls!

SheBiz is Back with Basketball Wife Jennifer Williams!

Hey Passionistas!

I’m baaaack! I know it’s been a while, but life called for a bit of a hiatus. Though it appears that SheBiz was absent, I’ve been busy chasing down some fabulous passionistas! I plan to share all that I’ve learned about them with all of you.

Last night, reality TV star, Jennifer Williams of the VH1 hit show, Basketball Wives, hosted an event to launch her new lip gloss brand, Lucid, right here in NYC at the posh Big Drop boutique. Needless to say, the launch was star studded and fabulous. It was all lights, camera, action, gloss, dons, divas, stilettos and fabulosity all over the place! Look forward to a glimpse of the event in the upcoming season of Basketball Wives.

That’s not all I want to focus on. Recently, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Miss Jennifer and was able to get the inside scoop on the woman behind the reality persona that we’ve come to know. I can surely tell you that Jennifer is not just another pretty face. She’s a well-educated, savvy business woman with brilliant ideas. There’s so much more to look forward to and I will be sure to clue you in every now and then about what’s happening with this passionista.

Keep an eye out for my full article on Jennifer Williams in upcoming publications. In the meantime, enjoy these few pictures from last night’s event.

Jane B

I Was Not Created for a 9-5 Existence!

Hello Passionistas!

I continue to bring inspiration from fellow passionistas and their journey to pursuing a life worth living! I’m excited to introduce you to Jane B, celebrity make up artist, beauty educator, owner of Restoration Cosmetics and host of The Jane B. Show. (Whew! I hope I have all of her titles intact). Check out Jane’s personal account about the pursuit of her passions and her vow to never work another 9-5 in her life! Then, check out the latest clips from The Jane B. Show. Her passion and skills are unmatched. This is my kind of passionista. I welcome you to read on and be inspired!

In the words of Jane B,

I am all about Passion. It is what wakes me up in the morning. My story in brief. I’ve always known that I was a creative person. However in 1995, while working a job in Corp. America, what seem like a voice from the heavens spoke to me and told me that I was not created for a 9-5 existence.

Like most people, I graduated from high school and then went on to college. After completing only one year, I left. You know the rest, I did what I thought I was suppose to do. I looked for a job. I temped for many years. Landing a few jobs here and there. However, it never felt quite right to me. I always knew somewhere deep inside that I was suppose to be doing something else.

Skipping ahead quite a few years, in 1997 I decided that a permanent position was not for me. As fate would have it, I was offered a permanent position at company where I was tempting. With the desire to purchase a car, I threw away my “no permanent work” stand and folded. Needless to say, I bought the car and stayed at that job for 5 more years.

Meanwhile, 1997 was also the year that I discovered that I had the gift of Makeup Artistry.

It wasn’t until September 11, 2001, that it finally hit me. If I gotta go, it can’t be at a job that I shouldn’t be at in the first place. As fate would have it, in 2002, the company I was with merged with two other companies. They downsized. I was out! It was the happiest day of my life. I felt “born-again”. I took a vow, that with the help of the Universe, it would be the last office job I would ever have.

After leaving that world, A brand new world opened up to me. It showed me how much about myself I didn’t know. I have learned so much about myself, about FAITH and about my craft. Mainly, it showed me how to relate to others while maintaining a love of self.

It is my mission to spread the good news of following your Passion. It has brought me happiness that I didn’t even realize existed.

Peace and Manifold Blessings, Jane B.

P.S. Two days after I left my last job, I made my last car payment !

Guess who’s in this clip?

On the Grind with a Passion for Fashion

Hey Passionistas!

I’ve been on the grind lately and have come across some amazing fellow dream girls. I recently caught up with Fashionista, Meca MdKinney. It’s my pleasure to introduce to you her because she has an insatiable passion for fashion! Check her out and be encouraged!

In conjunction with running Jypsea, being a full time mom, teaching and, being a fashion writer contributor for Tyra Bank’s site (TypeF.com), Meca McKinney’s passionate hands are really full. She is an accessory design graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology and holds a degree in art from Thomas Edison State College. Her journey has taken her throughout the NYC corporate fashion industry as a technical footwear designer to self-employment as an independent handbag designer and freelancer for corporations and other indies. Besides her own line of custom-made leather handbags and accessories, she is also a freelancer fashion writer for publications such as TypeF.com, EdgePhiladelphia.com, and The Examiner.com as well as and a lifestyle blogger. She teaches art/design to youngsters whenever possible, recently teaching handbag design for the Habitat of Humanity Recreation Center in Trenton and makes her rounds doing D.I.Y fashion workshops and guest speaking engagements. In May she was honored to be a guest speaker on a panel of entrepreneurial women at Princeton University.

In March 2011, her first design book, “ENVISION: The Young Accessory Designer’s Guide to Collection Development” was released.

Meca and her designs have been featured in Upscale Magazine, Philadelphia Magazine, Trace Magazine, Clutch Mag Online, and countless fashion blogs. Some notable wearers of Jypsea’s handbags and accessories include Neo-soul singer Res, Imani Copolla of the rock group Little Sister and Judith Jamison of the famed Alvin Ailey Dance Theater. She was recently on The Today Show in a feature about eco-friendly fashion.

“My mom made all of my clothes until junior high school. My grandma crochets and makes her own home decor and her mom sculpted. I grew up around creativity. I knew I would be a fashion designer by the time I was in the 6th grade. While still a student at F.I.T, I jumped at the chance to work in corporate America gladly accepting every design-related job offer; totally eager to participate in this fascinating world. I’ve held positions such as assistant designer, patternmaker, handbag designer, production manager, color assistant, account executive and technical designer for women’s apparel, footwear and dancewear manufacturers in NJ, ATL, and NYC.”

“I grew up fairly sheltered from the rough streets of Newark, NJ where I was from. I’m an avid reader. I had my books and my activities such as Girls Scouts and charm school. Most importantly, I always knew I was good at something. My something was “making stuff”. I could whip up a clay mask for a facial from the red clay on my uncle’s land where I visited in S.C during the summer. I could craft a gorgeous card from scratch for any occasion, make a vase in my pottery class, or design a fly vest to rock. When I look back over my life, I know that my ability to “make stuff” was what held my attention. It gave me self-confidence and problem-solving skills. This confidence has shielded me my entire life and it is now my mission to help others discover their passion and feel empowered by “making stuff”, says Meca.

Her childhood and early experiences in the fashion and art worlds have helped Meca develop her own niche which led her to establish her line of accessories, Jypsea~Eclectic Handcrafted Leather goods (http://www.jypsea.com/). “Creating a better world is a responsibility of us all and I choose to incorporate that consciousness into fashion”, Meca says. And even though she could have Jypsea manufactured oversees like many American designers, Meca seeks to create jobs here in the States by hiring local seamstresses to sew the one-of-kind pieces.

Going forward, Meca intends to continue to use her talents to aid the causes she supports and to continue to make the world a more stylish place, one eco-friendly, yet lux accessory at a time.

Check out Meca’s latest ebook How to Make a Designer Handbag.

7 Ways to Stay Fabulously Cool!

Hey passionistas! It’s as hot as we are in many areas of the US! I scoured the internet for help and found 7 fabulous tips to help us stay cool without losing our “fab factor.”

Here goes:

  1. Pull that mane back into a sleek bun, ponytail or roll – Keeping your hair off of your forehead, face and neck helps to keep you cool and keeps your hair from sticking to your skin frizzing from the sweaty heat.
  2. Stash your favorite fragrance in the fridge then mist that nice cool sweetness over your body after a revitalizing shower.
  3. Surprisingly helpful! Drink a nice cold glass of water before getting in the shower. It helps to keep you cool and hydrated. Who knew?
  4. Push the LBD to the back of the closet and pull out the LWLD (little white linen dress) instead! The color white reflects heat and light and linen breathes, which helps keep you stylish and cool!
  5. Drop a fresh sprig of mint in a nice tall glass of cold water. The menthol in mint triggers your body’s cold receptors. Also try adding cucumber to a tall pitcher of ice water. The flavor is amazingly refreshing!
  6.  Sttick a bottle of a fragrant, hydrating misting spray in your purse, pull it out and give yourself a little spritz every now and then.
  7.  Stick to shoes that you can slip on or slide into. When the feet are cool it helps the rest of the body stay cool. And when the feet are hot…you know the rest.
Just because it’s hot, don’t mean we can be fabulous!
